Welcome to the North Yorkshire Coast
Where the wild grandeur of the North Yorkshire Moors meets the coast, the rugged limestone and sandstone heather topped moors flow down to the sea throwing up cliffs, coves and picturesque bays. Explore an ancient landscape of farming and fishing communities that hug the landscape, villages sheltered in wide green valleys and bustling seaside towns with proud sea faring pasts. The Yorkshire Coast also forms part of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park offering a huge array of attractions and is a great location for your self catering cottage holiday. Scarborough has long been a favourite holiday spot offering something for everyone with seaside fun, history, thrills and entertainment. Enjoy easy access to bags of activities and attractions up and down the coast from Bridlington’s great golf courses to the quieter and more traditional Filey; pretty little Staithes, plus, Captain Cook’s home port and Bram Stoker’s inspiration – the fishing port of Whitby. If you love fossil hunting you won’t be disappointed on the beaches around Robin Hood’s Bay and it’s a rock poolers’ paradise when the tides roll out leaving a teaming assortment of sea life in the cracks and crevices on the shore line. Walkers too love this region; the Cleveland way skirts the eastern edge of the moor along the cliff tops offering superb views and there are many more activities to choose from. Riding, cycling, sailing, site seeing and maritime heritage, it’s all here and all close to your great holiday cottage on the North Yorkshire Coast.
Things to do on the North Yorkshire Coast
Walk this part of the Cleveland Way as it hugs the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors and you’ll get wonderful views over the valleys and cliffs. On your way you’ll pass through welcoming communities with great pub grub next to open fires, allowing the feet a rest before moving on. Take to the saddle and explore the moors from one of the many trekking centres along the coast or, if you prefer two wheels, check out the many cycle tracks and mountain biking centres. If you’d like to get out on the water you’ll be well catered for with plenty of fishing and leisure trips run from all the coastal centres including Scarborough and Whitby, you can even take a ride in a piece of living history aboard one of Whitby’s retired lifeboats. If you prefer to remain on dry land hop aboard Whitby’s open top tour bus and learn all about the maritime and literary past of this fascinating town. Children and adults love the Captain Cook Memorial Museum, dramatic Whitby Abbey and picturesque market square, harbour wall, unique shops and top fish and chips. For super family days out head for Scarborough with Scarborough Castle and Sea Life Scarborough, plus its golden sandy beaches of the North and South Bay, pier and arcades. Kids will love the donkey rides and mini-golf at Filey and The Spa in Bridlington: the fabulous, newly renovated home of seaside entertainment for all ages alongside two award-winning beaches and three of Yorkshire’s finest golf courses!
